Sub-Zero Repair

Sub-Zero is built to last 20 years and rebuilt to run another 10. We service the entire family — Classic, Designer, BI built-ins, IT integrated, undercounter, and wine — across every Valley city.

Sub-Zero repair across the San Fernando Valley, by factory-trained technicians.

Sub-Zero is the appliance most worth keeping running. A 1998 Sub-Zero 700 with a slow refrigerant leak is not the same problem as a 1998 Whirlpool — the Sub-Zero is worth restoring. We’ve worked on Sub-Zeros from the 1980s that still run perfectly. The platform was built to be serviceable, and we’re trained to service it.

Three things that distinguish Sub-Zero work:

Dual-compressor architecture. Most Sub-Zeros use two separate refrigeration systems — one for the freezer, one for the fridge. This is why a Sub-Zero with a warm fresh-food side might still be making ice fine. It also means a sealed-system repair on one side doesn’t disturb the other. We diagnose each circuit independently.

Magnetic door gaskets are repairable. Sub-Zero gaskets cost $200+ from the factory but are absolutely re-installable in your home — no shop time. We pull, condition, and reseat gaskets without scratching the cabinet, and we keep replacement gaskets for the most common BI and 700-series sizes on the truck.

The 7000-series is a learning curve. The post-2018 7000-series introduced new electronics, new diagnostics, and new parts. A tech who has only worked on classics will guess wrong on a 7000-series fault. We’ve trained on the 7000-series specifically and carry the right diagnostic tools for it.

Repair vs. replace, honestly

Built-in Sub-Zeros are virtually always worth repairing. A $1,200 sealed-system rebuild on a $14,000 unit is a no-brainer. The exception: catastrophic compressor failure on a 25+ year-old unit where the brazed joints are showing fatigue everywhere — that’s the rare case where we’d recommend replacement. We’ll always give you the honest math.

After 16 years on these units, here's what we see most.

Sub-Zero 600/700 series running warm in fresh-food side

What's actually happening: On 600/700 series (1996–2010), almost always a slow refrigerant leak in the upper evaporator's brazed joints, or a failed condenser fan motor.

The right fix: Pressure-test the sealed system, locate the leak with electronic detector, braze and recharge with R-134a or recover-and-replace. We carry the OEM-spec fan motor.

BI-48S/BI-36S 'service' light glowing red

What's actually happening: Vacuum-condenser-coil reminder, dirty condenser, or a failing condenser fan triggering an over-temp warning.

The right fix: Clean condenser thoroughly with our specialized brushes (a homeowner can do this too, but few do), reset service light, replace fan motor if amp draw is out of spec.

7000-series integrated unit not closing flush with cabinet

What's actually happening: Settled cabinet floor over the years, worn cam-action hinges, or a misadjusted door alignment from the original install.

The right fix: Re-shim cabinet base, replace hinges if cams are worn, realign panel to factory tolerance. The 7000-series alignment requires Sub-Zero-specific shims and a digital level.

Wine column zone temp drift (cellar-zone running warm)

What's actually happening: Failed thermistor on the cellar-side evaporator, or a leaky between-zone gasket allowing warm air migration.

The right fix: Test thermistor resistance at known temperatures, replace if drifted, inspect inter-zone seal.

Ice maker on built-in producing hollow or undersized cubes

What's actually happening: Inlet water filter clogged with calcium (Valley water), low water pressure to the unit, or a stuck water inlet valve in the unit.

The right fix: Replace OEM Sub-Zero filter, test water flow at the unit, replace inlet valve if needed. The Sub-Zero filter ($75) is worth using — generic filters cause this exact problem.

BI-30 column opening with a 'whoosh' and food slightly warmer than setpoint

What's actually happening: Failed door gasket, or — common on units 12+ years old — a sagging door from worn hinges allowing air infiltration.

The right fix: Replace gasket with factory-spec part (wet install), realign door, replace hinges if needed. A new gasket runs about $220 plus the install.
